New team dynamic. New success.
Despite a change-up in players, the Grand Canyon University Men’s Club Basketball Black team came together in the Arizona Men’s Basketball League (AMBL) Tuesday night to pull out a 64-61 victory over Bella Vista College Prep’s Team 2. The win was GCU Team 3’s first AMBL win of the season, bumping them up to 1-2 in conference play.
“The guys competed and played well for their first game back from break and first time playing together,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Matt Gordon. “We had a little more talent than we’ve had for the last couple of games.”
GCU wasted no time taking the lead early with the help of a trio of 3-point shots from Mason Peterson. The Lopes controlled the game until the final two minutes of the first half when the Bears fought back with a seven-point run to tie the score at 35-35 going into halftime.
The teams played nip-and-tuck basketball throughout the second half. With only four minutes left and the Lopes trailing by six points, GCU seized the momentum when Cain Hayhurst sank a 3 to begin a run that helped the Lopes blow by BVCP down the stretch.
“We were able to get some stops at the end and make some shots after the other team got ahead,” said Gordon. “(We) were able to fight back, which was cool to see.”
Fabrice Tuyizere and Peterson led the Lopes with 17 and 16 points, respectively.
“Mason and Fabrice did a good job scoring the ball for us,” said Gordon. “The guys all contributed at least in some way throughout the game. It was cool to see everybody do something.”
GCU Black returns to GCU’s Canyon Activity Center Friday night, Jan. 17 to face Hillcrest Prep. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 pm, and admission is free.
