New year, same results.
The Grand Canyon University Men’s Bowling team placed lower than 3rd only once in the first half of the season. In a pair of tournaments featuring a variety of west coast schools this past weekend at the Brunswick Via Linda Scottsdale Lanes, that trend continued as the Lopes took home 2nd place in the varsity division and 1st place on the JV side at both the Devils’ Duel Saturday and Antelope Shootout Sunday.
Lopes’ bowlers Cameron Smith and Justin Song were two of many contributors to the success of the team’s accomplishments this past weekend by averaging a score of 221.7 and 212.6, respectively. Smith’s score was the second best of any individual on day two for varsity.
Being the first games of the new semester, the team experienced small amounts of rust, but Lopes’ Bowling Head Coach Ben Canfield wasn’t too worried.
“We use these smaller tournaments coming out of a break as tune-up games so we can get back into a rhythm,” said Canfield. “I was really pleased with our team as a whole, and felt we showcased our depth with how well our JV team competed.”
The Lopes’ next tournament on the schedule is the Sin City Open in Las Vegas January 26 and 27, which will consist of the top programs from across the nation. As far as preparations go, there doesn’t seem to be any major changes being made to the regime.
“We just have to continue having solid practices throughout the week like we have had all season long,” said Canfield. “This has been a strong season for us, and we know we can finish it that way.”
