The sweet taste of victory.

The Grand Canyon University Flag Football team notched their first win and solidified their spot in the Scottsdale Adult Flag Football League playoffs this past weekend, 14-7.

“Everything we’ve worked for was showcased,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Dylan Sanchez. “This is what Lopes’ Football looks like.”

The first half started with a series of stalled drives by both teams. The GCU offense was the first to kick it into gear as Lopes’ freshman quarterback Sam Martin threw a precision touchdown pass from 30 yards out. Lopes’ freshman Ian Breyer caught the two-point conversion to give the Lopes an 8-0 lead at halftime.

“We felt like we were in control during the first half,” said Sanchez. “I was glad to see that what we had worked on during practice throughout the week had paid off.”

The Lopes’ opponents started the second half with a clock-killing drive down the field, but the GCU defense prevented them from scoring. The Lopes capitalized on the turnover and finished their drive with another passing touchdown. The Lopes’ opponents scored on their following possession but wasted much of the remaining clock, allowing GCU to close out the game for the win.

“This is the one and only spark that we needed to drive us into playoffs,” said Sanchez. “Winning this league would say a lot about how our group can come from no chemistry and tough losses to a successful and well-deserved winning football team.”

GCU (1-4) will now have to sit back and wait, since they have a bye for the final weekend of the regular season. Concluding this weekend’s games, the teams will be seeded into a single elimination bracket.

“We will most likely have to face the No. 1 or No. 2 team in the first round,” said Sanchez. “I’m excited because we have the opportunity to make a statement by beating our first opponent in the playoffs.”
