Growing pains.

The Grand Canyon University Flag Football team moved to 0-3 in the Scottsdale Adult Flag Football League after a tough loss this past weekend, 22-0.

“We were prepared to go against another great team in the division, but failed to execute and adjust to our new inputs,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Dylan Sanchez. “I was upset with this loss because I have seen us progress exponentially since our first week together.”

In the first half, the Lopes couldn’t clean up offensive errors that plagued them in the past, and after a few defensive miscues, trailed at halftime, 16-0.

“I always tell the team to reset the score in their minds at the half, because this is our second chance to go out and dominate,” said Sanchez. “The scoreboard is a factor we can’t let outweigh the importance of our execution.”

In the second half, the Lopes’ defense slowed down the opponent’s aerial assault, holding them to one score and preventing one of their extra points.

“We couldn’t win as a team or limit our individual mistakes throughout the game,” said Sanchez. “However, we broke down our film, pointed out our mistakes to make sure we’re all accountable and have a different outlook going into our next game.”

GCU is back in action this Saturday with a must-win game at 9 am at Vista del Camino Park in Scottsdale to keep their playoff hopes alive.
