GCU back in action for second Tespa tourney this weekend

The Grand Canyon University Esports Overwatch team ripped off four straight wins before being stopped by Hawkeye Community College of Iowa last weekend in the first of two Tespa Varsity Series Invitational qualifying tournaments.

The Lopes were hot to open the tournament, collecting wins against Upper Iowa University (2-0), Southern New Hampshire University (2-0), Washington State University (2-1-1) and Rutgers University (2-1) on Saturday. The 4-0 start propelled GCU into Sunday’s quarterfinals, where the Lopes were eliminated by the Redtails in a 2-1 result.

The second round-robin tournament of the Tespa Invitational kicks off Friday with a full slate of Overwatch action. GCU’s first matchup is against Northwest Christian University of Oregon, with the winner advancing to a second-round matchup with Michigan’s Ferris State University, which has an opening-round bye. Quarterfinal, semifinal, and final matches will be contested on Saturday.

This weekend’s Tespa Invitational tournament is the second and final regional round robin competition. All qualifying teams are placed into one of two eight-team regions. At the end of each round robin, the top four teams from each group advance to the Varsity Playoffs, which begin next month.
