Lopes Conquer Early Rounds, Earn Finals Berth
The Grand Canyon University Esports Rainbow Six Siege Team ripped through the Collegiate Esports Association League, earning a trip to the league finals.
Throughout the 2020 CEA campaign, the Lopes dominated in the regular season. The squad only dropped one series to The University of Texas at San Antonio, putting their record total at 4-1.
The Lopes carried that momentum into the postseason.
After beating Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 2-1, and winning convincingly over University of Maryland, Baltimore County, 2-0, the Lopes ran into a major challenge from University of Alabama in Huntsville. After losing in the first map, GCU sealed the victory by winning maps two and three right before overtime. The Lopes then secured two key victories with 2-0 shutouts over both University of Central Florida in the quarterfinals and University of North Carolina at Charlotte in the semifinals.
Strong team synchronization that has been built throughout the season has powered the Lopes to this point, along with strong postseason performances from veterans Francisco “C_B” Palos and Cam “Cash” Taylor, as well as their newest recruit and youngest player, Mason “Klimpse” Best. Palos and Taylor have posted heavy elimination numbers in the Lopes’ key victories. The Lopes have also slowly begun to expand their map pool, introducing new battle maps to the team, strengthening their in-game awareness.
The Lopes now look to their CEA Finals matchup against Texas Tech Thursday.
