The Grand Canyon University Club Ultimate Frisbee Team hosted the Canyon Classic Tournament at Colter Fields on the GCU campus last weekend, finishing with a 1-2 record against in-state competition.
The Lopes opened up tournament competition with a tight matchup against Northern Arizona University, ultimately losing by one point, 13-12. The Lopes then bounced back with a 13-8 win against Arizona State University’s B team. The Lopes finished the afternoon with a 15-4 loss to the University of Arizona.
While a losing record wasn’t what the Lopes had in mind, Lopes Head Coach Jesse Schwartz was still very proud of his team’s overall effort.
“Our biggest strength throughout the tourney was definitely the level of intensity that our team brought, and the way that they consistently gave 100 percent on the field,” said Schwartz. “Going forward, we will look to continue to capitalize off of our level of intensity and overall effort, while also building off of the sheer athleticism and Frisbee IQ that our athletes already possess.”
In addition to identifying some key building blocks for future competition, the weekend tourney was instrumental in uncovering the Lopes’ various shortcomings.
“Our main weakness over the weekend was definitely a lack of communication-both on offense and defense,” said Schwartz. “Whether it was communicating through switches on defense, or when someone is clearing, we could’ve been much better at simple and concise communication between players to help make everything run more smoothly.”
With a better understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses, the Lopes have a much better idea what they must improve if they want to remain competitive.
“It showed us the potential future of this team and how great they can become fi they keep getting better,” said Schwartz. “To do that, we just have to focus on the constant repetition of concepts in practice, and making sure that all our players are forming new, successful habits.”
The Lopes will next take the field at the New Year’s Fest Tournament on January 26 and 27 in Scottsdale.
