Ready. Set. Go.

After one year since their last race, the Grand Canyon University Triathlon team competed in the ICEMAN Triathlon at Lake Pleasant. Despite the long layoff, several Lopes placed high in their respective age groups in the race – which consisted of a challenging 750m swim, 20km bike, and a 5km run.

“It felt so good to finally go and compete again,” said GCU Triathlon Co-Coach Matthew Johnson. “We are thankful the race had the proper safety protocols in place to allow us to race again.”

GCU newcomer Andre Stablein, the Lopes’ only male competitor, finished the race in 1:17:28 taking 15th overall and 14th in male division. The solid performance of Stablein was evident by a combination of impressive bike (37:58) and run (17:43) splits.

The fastest female Lope was sophomore Lauren Roe with a time of 1:20:49. Roe started the race with a stellar swim (13:45) and finished strong with the run (22:01). Roe placed 20th overall and 4th in the female division.

“Overall, they all did an amazing job,” said Johnson. “I am proud of the way the team prepared despite COVID restrictions and that they all gave it their best efforts.”

This triathlon was a first-time event for many of the Lopes including Stablein, Rachel King, Sydney Garrison, and Talia Samuelson. King had a notable first-time performance with a time of 1:42:40, placing 12th in the female division.

“King had a great performance in her first triathlon ever,” said Johnson. “She showed all the work she has been putting in during practices.”

Coming up next for the Lopes is the Bartlett Lake Olympic Triathlon on March 28. This race will be a longer distance and have a more challenging terrain than the ICEMAN, which will mean adjusting the Lopes’ training.

“To prepare for this event, we going to incorporate interval training, hill workouts, and increased workout durations to keep fitness levels high for the difficult terrain,” said Johnson.
