The GCU Club Swimming team brought only four women and three men to compete at the UCSD Winter Invitational, but still earned four total national qualifying times. Due to the Lopes’ low numbers for the six-team tournament, the GCU Women placed fourth and the men’s team placed sixth.
“We knew right off the bat that we may not place high because the teams that scored in the top three had about 20 swimmers each,” said GCU Club Swimming Head Coach Jeremy Phung. “We were just looking to compete and improve individual times.”
Women – 4th Place Finish
GCU Club Swimming sophomore Rachel King swam in four individual events and two relay events for the Lopes. Out of her four individual events, she made three national qualifying times in the 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke and 100 backstroke.
“We’ve only been practicing for two weeks before this meet, so to practice for two weeks and make three national qualifying times is truly amazing,” said Phung.
“I’m proud that I made three national times with just starting the season off,” said King. “This meet was a good meet to see where I’m at, so in the future I can see how I’ve improved. I definitely want to build up my endurance.”
Colleen O’Kane swam in five total events for the Lopes, including the 100 butterfly, where she broke the GCU Club Swimming record with a time of 1:08.60.
Iliana Kaiser and Brooke Hudson also swam in six total events for GCU.
Men – 6th Place Finish
The men made one national qualifying time by less than a second from Simon Moore in the 50 breaststroke.
“He swam a phenomenal time,” said Phung. “He’s our number one breaststroker on the team now, which is amazing, since he came onto our team not as a breaststroker but more of a sprint freestyler.”
Along with Moore, Colin Yakely and Gordan Rianda swam in four individual events.
The full GCU Club Swimming team heads to Arizona Christian University this Friday, Jan. 31, for the Southwest Classic Invite. The events begin at 11:30 am at Moon Valley Country Club in Phoenix.
