Devon Mitchell has been at the forefront of growth for Grand Canyon University Club Spikeball, building the program from the ground up since its inception in 2019. His positive work within the community has earned him the peer-nominated Spikeball Inc. Ambassador of the Year award.
“To be recognized as Spikeball Inc. Ambassador of the Year is a great honor and privilege,” said the Lopes’ head coach. “GCU student leaders and the spikeball administration deserves to be recognized as well.”
The recommendation for the award came from Lopes’ senior spikeball athlete Dylan Bricker. Bricker has been with the program since August 2019 and has seen Mitchell build the Lopes from a small, nameless team to the No. 16-ranked program in the country.
“Devon has done a fantastic job coaching this team,” said Bricker. “Without Devon leading the GCU Club Spikeball program, it would not have the national prominence that it does.”
Mitchell received this prestigious award not only because of how he has grown the Lopes’ Club Spikeball program but also for what he has done for spikeball culture within the Valley. Throughout 2020, Mitchell partnered with the Utah Roundnet Association to put together multiple spikeball tournaments in the Phoenix area, namely the Phoenix URA Tour Stop and the Phoenix Turkey Bowl. These tournaments provided immense spikeball exposure to the Valley.
Along with the award, Spikeball Inc. has offered a prize in the form of new equipment for the GCU Spikeball team. High-quality Pro Sets and Pro Balls will soon be delivered to campus for the Lopes to use in practice.
