When it’s down to the wire, clutch plays need to be made.
This past weekend, the Grand Canyon University Club Softball team swept the University of California, Irvine in a three game series, 16-0, 18-6, and 14-4. It was a much-needed sweep for the Lopes and their hopes for the postseason.
The three-game sweep over the Anteaters showed a new side of the team to Lopes’ Head Coach Lindsey Collins.
“This season, we have been struggling for some reason,” said Collins. “A problem we were facing was playing together as a team, but this weekend, it was great to see the girls come together and perform so well. As a coach, I was like, ‘There we are, here we go’.”
The Lopes’ season has been up-and-down, which has put the team in a tough spot for postseason play. After the wins over UC Irvine, the Lopes are in second place in the Pacific Region South Conference of the National Club Softball Association, right behind San Diego State University, who the Lopes split a doubleheader with earlier this season. In order to reach the National Club Softball Association World Series, the Lopes have to clinch the number one spot in their conference.
“The wins over UC Irvine were much needed for us,” said Collins. “We have to win our doubleheader against NAU (Northern Arizona University) next month to stay in good standing, but it all depends on how SDSU does for the reminder of their season.”
As of now, postseason play is all up in the air, but that doesn’t faze the Lopes.
“The girls perform well under pressure,” said Collins. “The team knew how important this three-game series was, and they came together to get this win. This weekend was not only good for our standings, but for our confidence as a team and as individuals.”
The Lopes host Dawson Community College in the brand-new, state-of-the-art GCU Softball Stadium on Tuesday March 13 in a doubleheader starting at 3 pm, and admission is free.
