In their second straight three-game sweep in conference play, the Grand Canyon University Club Softball team swept Northern Arizona University in a three-game series, 10-0, 11-4, and 15-0. The sweep propels the Lopes to the top of the Pacific Region South Conference standings with a perfect 6-0 record.
“Before the game started, I told the girls, ‘You don’t take any team lightly,’” said Lopes’ Head Coach Lindsey Collins. “Expectations were higher in the second weekend, and they came out strong. Our bats came alive and that’s what kept us hot.”
Lopes’ standouts Launa Jones and Ashlyn Dzialo each hit two home runs during the three-game series.
“Overall, everyone hit,” said Collins. “We just pulled it together, made contact, and the scores reflect that. They are all looking comfortable in the (hitter’s) box.”
The Lopes are already capitalizing on their strengths at the plate, and continue to improve with each game – regardless of the opponent.
“Our success comes from going back to the basics,” said Collins. “Leading up to NAU, I wouldn’t let the team hit live, and did strict tee work for two weeks. It cleaned up their swings and made them more aggressive at the plate.”
Now that the first and second weekend jitters are out, Collins is seeing more pride coming from her charges.
“I expect them to sweep teams,” said Collins. “We are good enough. and it’s exciting that they see it, they feel it, and they carry it on to the field. They want to get out there and represent.”
The Lopes are back in action February 23 as they take on the University of Southern California in a tripleheader series starting at 11 am at North Canyon High School. Admission is FREE.
