2018 spring national champs positioned directly behind Florida in race for top spot

GCU Club Sports is proud to announce that the Grand Canyon University Club Men’s Golf team has been ranked No. 2 in the National Collegiate Club Golf Association (NCCGA) Preseason Top 25 Poll. It’s the third time in as many seasons that the Lopes have been ranked second or higher in the national poll to begin the year (they were second in 2017 and top-ranked last September). The announcement comes a little over four months since the Lopes battled the wind and rain at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana to finish seventh at the 2019 NCCGA Spring National Championships.
While finishing in the Top 10 yet again would be something that most club golf head coaches would relish, Lopes’ Head Coach John Wasson (and his team) came home from the Hoosier State a little dejected last April. After all, the Lopes have gotten used to not only being in the national championship discussion, but actually grabbing a championship crown. Besides winning their first-ever national title in the spring of 2018, the Lopes hadn’t finished lower than fourth in their four previous trips to the title tournament, and most felt they had failed to capitalize on their chances at Purdue’s Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. However, Wasson brings back a whopping five players from his top team of the spring for this season, including Braden Price, who finished in the top 25 individually in Indiana.
Wasson and the Lopes are wasting no time getting ready for another title run, since team qualifying for the first NCCGA Regional of the fall season happens this Saturday and Sunday, and the actual regional tournament is just two weekends away at The Legend at Arrowhead in Glendale. The 2019 NCCGA Fall National Championships will be held in Thackerville, Oklahoma Nov. 15-17.
