GCU Club Sports is proud to announce that the Grand Canyon University Club Men’s Golf team has been ranked No. 1 in the National Collegiate Club Golf Association (NCCGA) Preseason Top 25 Poll. It’s the first time in the program’s history it’s ever began the season ranked atop the national poll. The announcement comes a little over five months after the Lopes walked off the course at Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri with their first-ever NCCGA National Championship trophy.
While he’s been through enough seasons to stay just guardedly optimistic, Lopes’ Head Coach John Wasson has been rather confident over the summer about his team’s prospects for the coming season. Wasson’s team sports several returners from last year’s title run, including the individual medalist from last March’s Desert Region 2 Tournament in Prescott, Joey Russo. Wasson has also been pleased about the level of talent of his newcomers, who are expected to push several of the incumbents for the squad’s travel team. Wasson’s optimism was fortified the past two weekends by the showings of his 41 players, who vied for 22 open spots in the two regional qualifiers at the Grand Canyon University Golf Course.
Wasson and the Lopes are currently making their final preparations before heading across town to Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear to take part in the first NCCGA Regional of the fall season this Saturday and Sunday. The 2018 NCCGA Fall National Championships will be November 16 through 18 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
