Closing out the semester in style.

The Grand Canyon University Men’s Club Basketball Team White put on a show against Justice College on Tuesday night at the Canyon Activity Center. After losing in their first contest against Justice only a month prior, the Lopes dismantled Justice’s defense to take the 96-35 victory. GCU is now on a three-game winning streak with a 5-4 record on the season.

“When we play our best, we’re almost unbeatable,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Lamont Lane. “We did a great job of mixing up our offense and adjusting to what we saw last time we played this team.”

The Lopes started out with electric energy on both offense and defense, getting their hands in the passing lanes to create turnovers and facilitating the ball well to find the best shots on the floor. That helped the Lopes jump out to a 19-2 run in the first six minutes of the game.

As the game progressed, GCU only added to their lead, finding high-quality baskets and getting everyone involved in taking a 50-20 into halftime. Lopes’ guard Drew Lajocies led the Lopes in scoring with 19 points, cutting to the basket at every opportunity. Lajocies’ slashing presence – combined with the sharpshooting of Mason Peterson – who cashed in three 3’s in the first half – were the key to the Lopes building the 30-point lead before half.

The Lopes didn’t let up in the second half, staying active and engaged on both sides of the ball. Lane pulled the Lopes’ starters after they were up 80-25 with 10 minutes left, but still had six different players with double-digit scoring efforts.

“The offensive sets that we ran worked well for us,” said Lane. “It opened the door for everyone to get involved.”

Since it was the final game of the semester, the Lopes plan to carry this momentum into 2022 and build off their recent success.

“Going on a three-game win streak to end the semester lets our team go into the break with a positive mindset,” said Lane. “We just need to maintain our conditioning and skill work so that we don’t lose what we’ve worked on so far.”

GCU Purple ended their semester on a positive note as well, defeating Northern Arizona University, 85-79, in their first overtime game of the season. Lopes’ Steven Culvard led the way for the Lopes with 24 points – including 10 points in overtime, while Josiah Lucrecio racked up 15 points and five steals in the contest.

GCU White will kick off their second semester schedule at home against Arizona Christian University on January 11at 7 pm in the CAC.
