This is the first time the Lopes have faced outside competition in almost two years…

They haven’t missed a step.

“We’re now in the driver’s seat going into the next regional tournament,” said Lopes’ Head Coach John Wasson. “Winning this first tournament lifted the pressure off of us and put us in the perfect position to make nationals.”

The Grand Canyon University Club Golf team dominated the competition at the National Collegiate Club Golf Desert Regional Tournament 1, with the Lopes’ A, B, C & D teams placing in first, second, fourth and seventh place, respectively. By securing the top two podium spots, the Lopes held Arizona State University to third place, increasing their probability to win the Desert Region and head to the NCCGA Fall National Tournament in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

David Charos led the Lopes with an impressive even-par 72, placing him third overall in the individual results. After getting into early trouble with a triple bogey on the third hole, Charos rallied to collect birdies on the 8th, 9th, 10th and 12th holes.

His performance earned Charos All-Tournament Team honors, and he was joined on the squad by Lopes’ teammates Luke Wynn (74), Tommy Rohde (74), Nick Roberts (75), and Owen Deas (75).

“It’s great that our players could earn All-Tournament team spots,” said Wasson. “We have a really deep and competitive roster this year.”

The Lopes will try to repeat their victorious performance in the second regional event on October 23 at Forty Niner Golf Course in Tucson and earn their seventh straight NCCGA Nationals appearance.
