While navigating through the COVID-19 pandemic which shortened its season, the Grand Canyon University Club Golf team found a safe way to hit the links and satisfy their competitive itch through intrasquad 9-hole rounds.
“It’s great to be out there with the players,” said Lopes’ Head Coach John Wasson. “You can see the comradery has increased because everyone is relieved to be on the course again.”
The Lopes separated the Regional and Academy rosters into two divisions: Palmer (Regional roster) and Nicklaus (Academy roster).
“It is nice to be able to play golf competitively again,” said Lopes’ golfer Payson Parker. “Competing against others has helped my golf game grow.”
In the most recent 9-hole event, teammates Clay Gillum & Ben Luedtke of the Nicklaus Division and Tommy Rohde & Jacob Gray of the Palmer Division took home wins despite Mother Nature’s obstacles.
“This was the best I’ve played on the front nine, which was interesting considering fast wind gusts that day,” said Gillum.
The Lopes will be back at the GCU Golf Course for their last intrasquad 9-hole event on Mar. 27 at 6:30 am.
Here is the list of winners after four rounds in each division:
|Palmer Division||Nicklaus Division|
|Payson Parker||Noah Shreve|
|Tommy Rohde||Clay Gillum|
|Jacob Gray||Ben Luedke|
|David Charos||Victoria Stitt|
