The Grand Canyon University Club Golf team wrapped up their intrasquad 9-hole event series with an exciting game that came down to the last putt. This event also marked the end of the team’s 2021 season.
The Lopes switched up the format for their last 9-hole event, making it a mixed division, blind-draw round. The team divided its roster into two ‘divisions’ (Palmer and Nicklaus) to create competition throughout the spring. Each golfer from the Palmer Division was randomly paired with a player from the Nicklaus Division, and the golfers didn’t find out who their partner was until the round was over. After nine holes of back-and-forth lead changes, the score was even between teams Braden Price/ Callum Tomlin & Preston Larson/ Tyler Smerz. The tiebreaker came down to a putt-off, and with the entire team watching, Larson sank his putt for the walk-off win.
“Tyler and I have played together before and know that we can be even better than were,” said Larson. “I’m glad I could play with such a skilled golfer and leave with the win.”
Being that it was the last event of the season, Lopes’ Head Coach John Wasson also had a chance to recognize the seniors listed below for their growth throughout the golf program:
“It’s been really special to watch the seniors grow as individuals,” said Wasson. “They went from being a ‘deer in the headlights’ to being strong leaders for the team.”
