Coming off a 13-0 loss last Saturday, the GCU Men’s Club Flag Football team will become the first GCU Club Sport to end their 2018 regular season when they take the field this Saturday, October 27. The 2-3 Lopes have an automatic bid to the playoffs in the Scottsdale Men’s Flag Football League, but entering the playoffs with momentum is something the entire team has deemed to be of great value. The Lopes also enter this weekend looking to beat one of the three teams that has beaten them already this year.
Due to inclement weather in October, last Saturday’s loss was the first time GCU had taken the field in three weeks. That three weeks of offensive rust in the shutout loss was obvious to Lopes Head Coach and wideout Tre Stevens.
“We are still struggling with getting the ball out the quarterback’s hands fast enough,” said Stevens. “When we find ourselves in a short “down and distance situation”, we have to be able to either give our QB more time, or create quicker plays. ”
On a positive note, the 13 points allowed by the Lopes’ defense is a vast improvement from earlier in the year.
“We stopped giving up huge chunk plays, and made the team dink and dunk all day,” said Stevens. “Now we have to just get even tighter in coverages so that teams can’t convert short distances on us like last week (their opponents were 2-for-2 on 4th down).”
H2: Looking Ahead
With this weekend being the final opportunity to work through some kinks before the “lose and you’re out” playoff format kicks in, the team’s confidence in their postseason chances is growing.
“There’s no real standout in the division this year,” said Stevens. “With everyone beating everyone, I know that we have a good shot-no matter who we play come playoff time. Our goal is to earn a quality win this weekend, and hopefully continue that success when it counts most.”
The Lopes will take the field this Saturday, October 27th at Falcon Park in Scottsdale . Kickoff for the game is at 9 am.
