After a bittersweet ending to last season, the Grand Canyon University Bowling team got the ball rolling for 2021.
The Lopes returned to Glenfair Lanes in Glendale for a preseason assessment of their skills. 22 men and 7 women arrived to show what they could do. The assessment was run as an individual tournament, splitting the bowlers up randomly to play a series of six games on challenging lane conditions.
According to Lopes’ Head Coach Ben Canfield, after tracking total pin fall, averages, clean frame percentage, and other intangibles, Mathew Adragna from the men’s side and Mackenzie Theophilus on the women’s side posted the best scores of the day.
“It was great to see everyone back in competitive action,” said Canfield. “We are trying to set a solid foundation with this season, giving everyone a chance to compete, grow and develop in order to get our team chemistry where it needs to be for next fall.”
H2: GCU Team Tournament
After a successful first round of evaluations, the Lopes returned to Glenfair Lanes a week later to continue preparations to get into competition form by hosting an intrasquad scrimmage.
The men’s roster was split into four separate teams, with the women’s team competing alongside them. They used match play format with a combination of individual and baker style games. The team comprised of two-handed bowlers – Benjamin Laffoon, Devin Thornton, Jake Fenn, Lukas Carlson, and Nathan Ryan – ended the day with the highest score, with Ryan producing the highest individual score and average to help lead his team to victory.
“It was another chance for evaluations before moving into our first competition,” said Canfield. “We are looking forward to competing with the three other local schools.”
That first competition happens this Saturday, February 20 at the Arizona Cup at Bowlero Glendale in Glendale. The men and women will be competing side by side against teams from Arizona State University, Arizona Christian University, and Ottawa University.
