The first go around is always a learning opportunity.
It has been a tough inaugural season for the Grand Canyon University Club Beach Volleyball program. The club has experienced a variety of cancellations and little competition, but the Lopes were able to conclude their first season at home.
Last Friday, the GCU Club Beach Volleyball team took on both Arizona Christian University and Northern Arizona University. In order to win the match, the doubles had to win two of three sets.
Women’s doubles started the evening, but the Lopes were unable to win any matches in the team’s double header against ACU and NAU. For the men’s side, multiple doubles were able to find an upbeat tempo to beat NAU, 4-2, in less than three sets. The men saw a massive improvement over the last time they faced off against NAU where only one double were able to get a result.
The match not only closed Season 1 for GCU Club Beach Volleyball, but also the first season of Lopes’ Head Coach Kelli Dallmann’s young coaching career.
“Overall, it went really well,” mused Dallmann about Year 1. “We trained and learned a lot this season. We were unable to have a ton of competition because club beach volleyball is very new, but I know it will grow and develop further as we continue with the program.”
