Lopes’ Pitchers Shine in Victory

With their offensive output lacking, the Grand Canyon University Club Baseball team leaned on the strong performance of their pitchers to pull off a 6-0 victory to salvage a split of their doubleheader with the Scottsdale Post Grad Club Team after dropping Game 1, 4-1. The Lopes went 1-2 on the week after losing to Ottawa University, 14-7.

The Lopes found success on the mound in their second matchup of the day.

Lopes’ pitcher Ben Ineson led the defense with a strong performance on the hill, firing five shutout innings, allowing just three hits (all singles) and no walks while striking out six.

Following Ineson’s performance was Lopes’ pitcher Sam Mueller, who didn’t give up a hit in his two innings while working around four walks.

The Lopes’ offense managed just four hits, but was resourceful, since five of the six Lopes who scored got on via a base on balls. The Lopes used four of those walks and a single for a four-run 3rd inning that put the game out of reach.

GCU’s Jonah Zembik led the way, reaching base in four of his five at-bats, scoring once and knocking in a run.

The Lopes’ pitching wasn’t as helpful in Game 1, allowing 10 hits.

However, the Lopes stayed close the entire game. The Lopes got on the board in the 6th, thanks to doubles from Jacob Fisher and Michael McGraw to cut Scottsdale’s lead to 2-1, but the Post Grads scored two in the final inning to salt the victory away.

Ottawa 14, GCU 7

Offensive output wasn’t lacking from either team in the Lopes’ matchup against Ottawa. The Spirit scored 14 runs on 17 hits with 2 home runs.

Offensively, Lopes’ designated hitter Connor Lawrence led the team with 3 hits and 2 RBI, while Easton Babe and Connor Drish had two hits apiece.

Today, the Lopes will again travel to the spring training complex at Surprise Stadium to take on Ottawa University, with the first pitch scheduled for 5 pm.
