First-ever loss of an NCBA weekend series drops Lopes to No. 11 in latest rankings

GCU Club Sports is proud to announce that the Grand Canyon University Club Baseball team is ranked No. 11 in the latest National Club Baseball Association (NCBA) Rawlings Division I Poll. It’s a drop of eight spots from the previous poll two weeks ago, and it marks the first time in exactly a calendar year that the Lopes are not ranked in the NCBA Top 10. However, it’s the 11th consecutive time the Lopes have been represented in the national poll since moving up to Division I before the 2018 season.
The Lopes knew they’d be in line to drop in the rankings after losing two of the three games in their series last weekend to unranked UC-San Diego at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark on the GCU campus. It was history-making of sorts, since the Lopes had never lost a three-game series on the Division I level, but they did end the series on a high note, coming from behind in the final 2 innings Sunday to beat the Tritons, 8-7.
That series was the last conference matchups the Lopes will see before Spring Break happens on the GCU campus in just over a week. However, they will battle an NCBA team from the Northern Pacific South Conference next Monday, March 11 when they host Utah State University in a single game. The Lopes and Aggies will play at Red Mountain Sports Complex (Brown Road just west of Loop 202 in Mesa), and first pitch is scheduled for 3 pm. Admission is FREE.
