12-game winning streak, region title help Lopes make jump of 8 spots in new NCBA DI Poll

GCU Club Sports is proud to announce that the Grand Canyon University Club Baseball team is ranked No. 4 in the latest National Club Baseball Association (NCBA) Rawlings Division I Poll. It’s a jump of a whopping eight spots from the last poll, and it’s a total of 14 places that the Lopes have risen in the last two polls (four weeks). While it may be the first time the Lopes have made it into the NCBA Top 5 since early March, it’s the fourth time this season, and the eighth time in the last calendar year that GCU has been ranked either 3rd or 4th in the national poll.
The national pollsters were obviously swayed by the dominance the Lopes showed in taming the four-team field this past weekend at the NCBA Southern Pacific (SoPac) Regional Tournament in Lancaster, California. The Lopes run-ruled their first two opponents, then built a six-run lead in the championship game Sunday before holding on for a 7-6 win over No. 12 UC-Santa Barbara to earn their 2nd straight region title.
It also extended the Lopes’ current winning streak to 12 games, which they’ll take into next week’s NCBA DI World Series in Holly Springs, North Carolina. For the second straight year, the Lopes are the 4th seed in the eight-team tournament, and will open up play Saturday, May 25 at 10:30 am (7:30 am Arizona time) against 5th-seeded (and 5th-ranked) Florida State University to close out the first round of games. The Lopes will be seeking to best their 3rd-place finish of a year ago.
