GCU Club Sports is proud to announce that the Grand Canyon University Club Baseball team is ranked No. 4 in the National Club Baseball Association (NCBA) Rawlings Division I Preseason Poll. It’s the second straight year that the Lopes have earned a spot in the preseason rankings, although it’s a slight drop of two spots from their No. 2 position (the highest ever in the history of the program) in the NCBA’s final poll of 2019. It’s also the fourth time in the last calendar year that the Lopes have earned a spot in the NCBA Top 10.

With a pair of top-3 finishes under their belts in as many years, the Lopes were a bit surprised that their national ranking had slid a couple of spots from the final poll. Nevertheless, Lopes’ Head Coach Rich Warnol and Company are ecstatic to receive preseason respect from the national pollsters for the second year in a row. The Lopes will enter NCBA play looking to defend not just a pair of Southern Pacific South Conference titles and a pair of regional championships, but hoping to advance to the NCBA Division I World Series in Holly Springs, North Carolina for the third straight year and earn a second straight spot in the national title game this coming June.

The Lopes began their 2020 spring regular season with a pair of losses at Ottawa University Development and at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. The Lopes will play three more non-conference tuneups (including tonight at 6 pm at CGCC) before commencing SoPac South play with a three-game series over President’s Day Weekend at University of California-San Diego. Their first home conference series of 2020 happens Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 29 and March 1 when they host University of Arizona in a three-game set. Both Saturday’s doubleheader and Sunday’s single game will have a 10 am first pitch and will be played at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark on the GCU campus.
