27 runs. Still came down to defense.
The Grand Canyon University Club Baseball teams salvaged the final game of a three-games-in-three-days stretch, outlasting Ottawa University, 14-13, at Willow Canyon High School in Surprise. The win came after the Lopes were swept by Arizona Christian University two days earlier.

The Lopes found success in game 3 against the Spirit with explosive offense and perfectly timed defense. The Lopes found their rhythm in the 4th inning as all nine hitters in the GCU lineup scored in the frame to give GCU an 11-3 edge.
OUAZ used a pair of four-run innings to battle back, and trailed GCU by one run heading to the bottom of the 9th. Despite the Spirit’s leadoff hitter reaching second base with no outs, the Lopes’ defense made three solid plays to end the rally.
Lopes’ leadoff hitter Jacob Fisher led the way for GCU, going 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring three times, knocking in two more runs, and producing the final out to seal the Lopes’ victory.

The Lopes struggled defensively in both games. Despite the Lopes’ Sheldon Medina going 2-for-2 in Game 1, and Jordan Alexander contributing a double in the second game, the Lopes’ bats were flat all day. According to Lopes’ D2 Head Coach Kim Carpenter, another strong performance on the hill by Lopes’ ace Ty Magin couldn’t overcome the Lopes’ defense.
“We did not play baseball the way we know how to,” said Carpenter. “We gave up a lot of runs as a result of not being able to play solid defense.”
The Lopes will take the field again Thursday, February 25 against Ottawa University at 5 pm at Willow Canyon High School in Surprise.
