Lopes’ Offense Struggles to Support Defensive Errors

After scoring nine runs, including a home run, it still wasn’t enough to give the Grand Canyon University Club Baseball team a victory.
The Lopes played the familiar faces of Ottawa University and Arizona Christian University in their most recent matchups. The Lopes suffered a narrow defeat from ACU, 11-9, following their disappointing 11-3 loss to Ottawa.
ACU 11, GCU 9
Five GCU hits and 11 walks from Firestorm pitching weren’t enough for the Lopes to keep pace with the offense of ACU.
The Lopes held a 6-4 lead after four innings, but the Firestorm’s 15-hit attack changed that with six runs over the next two innings to take the lead for good.
Lopes’ left fielder Connor Pederson tried to ignite a comeback in the 9th inning blasting a home run over the left field wall, but the Lopes got no closer.
Ottawa 11, GCU 3
GCU had similar troubles stopping Ottawa’s offensive attack as the Spirit’s offense capitalized on the Lopes’ defensive errors.
The Lopes’ Zach Geyer was half of the Lopes’ four-hit attack, going 2-for-2 with a triple and a run batted in.
The Lopes head back to Dream Center High School in Glendale this Wednesday, March 3 to battle ACU again in a single, nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm.
