9-game winning streak brings national respect back for Lopes on edge of postseason

GCU Club Sports is proud to announce that the Grand Canyon University Club Baseball team is ranked No. 12 in the latest National Club Baseball Association (NCBA) Rawlings Division I Poll. Four weeks ago, GCU spent its first week out of a poll in more than a calendar year, but the national respect has returned in droves, since the Lopes made the largest jump – six spots – of anyone in the top 20 this week. The Lopes were just two spots shy of enjoying their tenth NCBA Top 10 ranking since moving up to Division I before the 2018 season.
Not only did the Lopes experience the largest jump in the polls, they’re also in the midst of the one of the longest winning streaks of any team in the national rankings. Buried in the middle of the NCBA Southern Pacific South Conference standings just a month ago, the Lopes strung together a nine-game winning streak to leapfrog two teams in the standings. Their three-game sweep of Northern Arizona University this past weekend at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark also clinched their 2nd straight SoPac South title.
That means the Lopes earn an automatic bid to the SoPac Regional Tournament in Lancaster, California, May 10 to 12, but still have to wait for other teams in the region such as No. 8 UCLA and No. 9 UC-Santa Barbara to finish out their regular season schedules this coming weekend to find out who else will round out the four-team field, and who will be the Lopes’ first opponent a week from today. Three wins at the double-elimination tournament will send the Lopes to Holly Springs, North Carolina, and the 2019 NCBA Division 1 World Series for the second consecutive year.
