Lopes use important sweep of SDSU to leap back into latest rankings

GCU Club Sports is proud to announce that the Grand Canyon University Club Baseball team is ranked No. 18 in the latest National Club Baseball Association (NCBA) Rawlings Division I Poll. After dropping out of the poll last week for the first time in over a year, the Lopes have leaped over Tulane University (LA) and jumped into a tie for the 18th spot with upstart Houston Community College from Texas. The Lopes’ national rankings in 2019 have ranged from No. 3 to No. 20, and they’ve been part of the rankings in six of the seven NCBA Polls this season. The Lopes have also been ranked in the NCBA Top 10 a total of nine times since moving up to Division I before the 2018 season.
After seeing a combination of early-season struggles and rainouts send the Lopes out of the national rankings AND out of the top two spots in the standings of the NCBA Southern Pacific South Conference, GCU went into “backs against the wall” mentality a couple of weeks ago… and it’s worked. The three wins last weekend at San Diego State University was their first sweep of the season in conference play. The sweep not only kept their playoff hopes alive, but also moved them back into 2nd place in the SoPac South above UC-San Diego by percentage points.
The Lopes now head south this weekend for a huge three-game set against University of Arizona Saturday and Sunday in Tucson. The Lopes’ final home series of the season happens Saturday and Sunday, April 27 & 28, when they finish off conference play against Northern Arizona University in a three-game matchup. First pitch for Saturday’s doubleheader and Sunday’s final game will be at 10 am, and all three games will be played on the big stage: Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark on the GCU campus. Admission is FREE.
