Phoenix, Arizona – September 6, 2017 – Grand Canyon University Club Sports is proud to announce that the Lopes eSports program is partnering with the Arizona Diamondbacks to host the Diamondbacks Super Smash eSports Tournament this Sunday afternoon, September 10. The event will be held at Chase Field as part of the Diamondbacks’ 1:10 pm game with the San Diego Padres. The Super Smash Tournament will commence shortly after first pitch on the club level at Chase Field, and the tournament will conclude following the conclusion of the baseball game.
The event is a great opportunity for GCU eSports members to show their growing talents on a huge stage, and a chance for prospective students to sign on and learn more about what is becoming one of the fastest-growing club sports programs around. The GCU eSports club has nearly doubled in its roster numbers in just over a year of existence, and sports nearly 60 student-athletes as it heads into the 2017 fall semester. However, there are still plenty of opportunities for those wanting to be a part of it, and Sunday’s tournament gives those the chance to also enjoy nine innings of major league baseball to go along with the competitiveness of the tournament.
The tournament itself will feature both Super Smash Brothers Melee and Super Smash Brothers 4, and GCU eSports members get into the game and the tournament of their choice for free. Friends and guests have the opportunity to purchase a discounted $25 game ticket, and a portion of those proceeds goes back to the burgeoning GCU eSports club. The first part of the tournament for both Smash Melee and Smash 4 will begin at 1:30 pm. The Final Four for Smash 4 will begin at approximately 4:45 pm, and the final four for Smash Melee will commence at approximately 5:45 pm (although those times are subject to change in relation to the conclusion of the baseball game). Both of the final four tournaments will be shown directly on the Chase Field Jumbotron to add excitement to the tournament championship. Both tournaments will be held on the club (second) level of Chase Field on the first base side of the stadium.
Those interested in entering the tournament must pre-register by filling out the attached form, and returning it to GCU eSports club member Preston Eder prior to Sunday’s baseball game at email@example.com.
