In their first event of the season, Alex Stambaugh and Taylor Oda gave the Grand Canyon University Powerlifting team something to flex about.
Stambaugh and Oda were the only two Lopes to compete in The Lumberjack in Flagstaff last weekend, but the pair of lifters turned in gold medal-worthy performances.
Competing in the men’s 165-pound junior division, Stambaugh recorded a squat of 286.6 pounds, a bench press of 198.4 pounds and a deadlift of 330.7 pounds. Stambaugh’s total weight lifted amassed 815.7 pounds – good for first place in his division.
Oda also took first place in her category: the women’s 132-pound junior division. Her total weight lifted was 578.7 pounds after registering a 226-pound squat, 110.2-pound bench press and 242.5 pound-deadlift.
The lifts were personal bests for both GCU athletes.
“This was their first meet, and they had been working hard for this,” said GCU Powerlifting Head Coach Alex Cox. “Their hard work paid off in the end. They both set personal records in all three lifts, which was awesome to see.”
