Too little, too late.
Team Lopes of the Grand Canyon University Flag Football program put together a second-half surge, but it wasn’t enough to save their season in a 26-19 loss to the Medulla Oblongatas last weekend in the opening round of the City of Scottsdale 8 vs. 8 Division II playoffs at Chaparral Park.
The Lopes, playing in the ‘B’ bracket, trailed, 13-0, at halftime before two long touchdown passes from quarterback Tyler Henry to receiver Dylan Sanchez made things interesting.
The Oblongatas, who beat the Lopes in the regular season, didn’t fold, scoring a pair of touchdowns of their own to prevent a comeback and send GCU home.
“They (Oblongatas) rushed three guys and were able to get pretty good pressure on our quarterback,” said GCU Flag Football Coordinator Justice Guerrero. “We made some mental mistakes that we aren’t used to making. We corrected it in the second half, but ran out of time.”
The Lopes finished the spring season with a 5-3 record – a huge improvement from an 0- 9 mark in the fall season. Many of the players on the winless fall team played for the Lopes in the spring.
“The guys really stepped up,” Guerrero said. “I think a big reason for the turnaround was that the guys had a lot of reps together, dating back to the fall. It finally started to click.”
GCU’s other flag football team, GCU White, will play their second-round playoff game Saturday at Chaparral Park at 11 am. GCU White (3-4) is the No. 2 seed in the ‘C’ bracket and is coming off a first-round bye.
