Lopes return to event for fourth consecutive year

Thousands of participants. One opportunity. Countless memories.
For the fourth straight year, the Grand Canyon University CrossFit team will participate in the CrossFit Games Open. The Open is the largest fitness competition on Earth, and showcases the skill and strength of the entire CrossFit community. For a five-week period, beginning this Sunday, GCU CrossFit athletes will get a chance to compete alongside each other to push through boundaries and break personal records.
From Shanghai to Serbia, Alaska to Africa, athletes around the world will conduct a certain workout applicable to their age and gender. Once the workout is completed, their scores will be submitted to a national leaderboard. Top 20 finishers worldwide and national champions in each gender grouping will automatically qualify for the 2019 Reebok CrossFit Games.
Lopes’ Head Coach and Club President Carter Senechal is excited about the opportunity to compete with his team, and sees the Open as a way to grow closer.
“We have a really great group,” Senechal said. “Our goal is to go out there and have fun with the competition. In the end, though, this event is just a way to build community within our group.”
The CrossFit Open will announce the workouts online every Thursday, allowing participants until the end of the day Sunday to complete the lifts. Worldwide weekly winners will be announced the following Monday during the duration of the five weeks.
Senechal is less worried about his team’s individual performances than the environment created.
“Our training up until this point has felt like adult PE,” said Senechal. “We enjoy being together as a team and cheering each other on, and The Open gives us an opportunity to do so on a more competitive level.”
The Lopes will hold their heats at CrossFit URU (11042 N 24th Ave. in Phoenix) starting this Sunday at 7:30 pm, and will run for the next four consecutive Sundays.
