“This is the best team we have ever had, we just need to play the way we are capable.”

Coming off a seventh-place finish a semester ago in West Lafayette, Indiana at the NCCGA Spring National Championships, the GCU Club Golf Team, with many fresh faces, looked poised to return to the glory they found themselves in back in the spring of 2018. Unfortunately, the two-day event didn’t quite go as planned as the Lopes headed back to the desert with asixth-place finish.

This year’s fall championship was hosted by the Winstar Golf Club in Thackerville, Oklahoma to a field of 27 teams from across the country. Clemson University, the favorite entering the weekend, defended their spring title, hoisting another NCCGA Championship trophy. The University of Virginia’s Jacob Kuchta captured the individual title with a score of 141 (-3) edging out Dennis Volostnykh from Michigan State in a playoff.

GCU’s top finisher on the weekend was Nick Roberts, who placed in a tie forfifth amongst the 228 participants with a total score of 143, just two shots off the leader.

“Nick has a ton of tournament experience,” said Lopes’ Head Coach John Wasson. “He’s mentally a very strong player, and it showed as he displayed a solid all-around game this weekend.”

As a team, the Lopes played the brand of golf Wasson has been trying to bring out all season long:  consistent and able to fight off adversity.

“Though we didn’t win, I was happy with the overall play of everyone,” said Wasson. “We had consistent, steady play. A couple of guys who had bad holes could have imploded, but they did a great job of keeping their composure and grinding it out.”

The Lopes will not return to intercollegiate competition until 2020, but will continue with their daily practice and weekly nine-hole tournaments at the beautiful GCU Golf Course
