GCU Club Sports is proud to announce the promotion of former assistant coach/defensive coordinator Jeff Guy as the new head coach for the Grand Canyon University Men’s Lacrosse program heading into the 2020 campaign. This will be Guy’s second stint as the head men’s lacrosse coach after leading GCU’s NCAA Division II program from 2010-2011.
“I have coached at a few other universities, but GCU is special for many reasons,” Guy said. “The university supports the program very well. We have outstanding facilities and it attracts lacrosse players from all over the country.”
The Salisbury, Connecticut native returned to GCU five years ago after stints as an assistant at NCAA Division I powerhouse Princeton University from 2011-2012, and as the head coach at University of Dallas from 2012-2014. Through years of establishing himself as one of the top young coaches in the country, Guy is ready to build his own legacy at GCU.
“Bringing a high standard of effort into the program is something that will benefit each individual player on the team,” said Guy. “That is something I am dedicated to do as head coach and something I expect my assistant coaches and players to do as well.”
In terms of play style, Guy doesn’t anticipate an overhaul, but more of an adaptive process, while using his personnel to the best of their abilities.
“Whatever play style we display will be the style that gives us the best chance to win on that individual game,” said Guy. “Each game will be a little bit different – depending on the strengths and weaknesses of our opponent.”
No matter the style the Lopes play this season, Guy is determined and excited for the newest chapter of GCU Men’s Lacrosse.
“My goals are to put the team on the field that will do their absolute best to execute properly in order to win as many games this season and seasons to come,” said Guy. “Each year, we want to be competitive in the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference and on a national level.”
The Lopes kick off their season on Saturday, Feb. 22 when they head to San Luis Obispo, California to take on Santa Clara University. The Lopes’ home schedule commences on Saturday, Feb. 29 when they host Texas A&M University at 1 pm at GCU’s Prescott Field. Admission is FREE.
