Tyler Henry tossed three touchdowns to lead the Grand Canyon University Flag Football Lopes to a 22-14 victory over brethren GCU White last weekend at Chaparral Park in the final regular season game of the 2020 City of Scottsdale 8 vs. 8 Division II Spring season.

One of Henry’s touchdown passes was to Hannahh Moncrief, her first score of the season.

“We were all happy to see that,” said GCU Flag Football Program Coordinator Justice Guerrero, who also plays for GCU White. “That was her first touchdown of the season and we were all excited about it, even though our teams were playing each other.”

GCU Lopes was the first to score, but Henry’s two-point conversion pass was intercepted by GCU White and returned to the house. The Lopes then extended their lead to 14-2 on Moncrief’s touchdown catch before GCU White cut the lead to 14-8 with a score.

Henry’s third touchdown pass of the game put the Lopes up 22-8 before GCU White finished the scoring with one last touchdown.

Both teams played other opponents earlier in the day. GCU White beat Red Flags, 25-0, while GCU Lopes was a 12-0 winner over Megalodons in their morning game.

GCU White (3-4) and GCU Lopes (5-2) both qualified for the City of Scottsdale Playoffs. GCU White was given the No. 2 seed, and an accompanying first-round bye, in the ‘C’ bracket, while GCU Lopes are the No. 4 seed in the ‘B’ bracket.

GCU Lopes will play fifth-seeded Medulla Oblongatas in a rematch of a game that featured a controversial finish a few weeks ago.

GCU White will play the winner of Team Bye Week and Red Flags on March 14 in Scottsdale.

“I feel we have a great chance in both brackets,” Guerrero said. “When you look at how well GCU Lopes finished the season, you could make the case they could have been the No. 1 seed in that bracket. I have complete confidence in those guys.

“And for GCU White, we’re hoping to have everybody available with our game being during Spring Break, but I like our chances if we have our full roster.”
