There is a distance for everyone!
The Grand Canyon University Running Club ran their first race of the New Year at the Humana Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon – which spanned the Phoenix area. Leading the way for GCU was Jaimeson King, who finished a 10k (6.2 miles), and recorded an impressive time at 39 minutes and 15 seconds. King placed third in his age group (Male 18-24) and took 19th place out of 2,965 runners overall.
“They all come in ready and prepared to train hard,” Lopes’ Head Coach Kim Weeldreyer. “They work well together and encourage each other, and really make the most of being together on a team.”
This was the Lopes’ third year participating in the race among a sea of over 16,000 runners, and they placed four runners in the top five of their age group.
Lopes’ half-marathon standouts Elaina Marchegger and Jenna Miller completed the 13.1 mile race, placing in the top five of their age group. Marchegger crossed the tape placing second in her age group (Female 18-24) with a time of 1:34:45, while Miller placed fifth in her age group (F18-24) with a time of 1:37:51.
“All of my runners finished at the very top of their age groups or overall,” said Weeldreyer. “They all did very well and were happy with the outcomes.”
GCU’s freshman Tyler Gerke ran his first-ever marathon with a final time of 3:46:28.
“Tyler ran a marathon and had never ran a half-marathon or marathon before,” said Weeldreyer. “If you make a marathon in under four hours, that’s awesome.”
The Rock ‘N’ Roll Arizona Marathon is an annual race to kick start the national Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon Series across the United States. Runners have the opportunity to run a 5k, 10k, half-marathon, or marathon. The Lopes had participants in the 10k, half-marathon, and marathon.
