“This weekend served smiles for miles,” said Lopes Head Coach Kim Weeldreyer.

The Grand Canyon University Running Club ran its first race of the season on Saturday at REVEL Mt Lemmon, and following that with the 44th Annual 3TV Phoenix 10K and Half Marathon Sunday through downtown Phoenix for a second consecutive year.

“This was an incredible opener for the season,” said Weeldreyer. “This road race was new to a lot of my runners, and most of my returners beat their personal record. We had fun this weekend, and that’s all I can ask for.”

REVEL Mt Lemmon Half-Marathon

Leading the way for GCU was Bridget Marvin, who recorded an impressive time at 1 hour 33 minutes and 5 seconds in the half-marathon. Marvin placed first in her age group (female 19-24), as well as taking 24th overall.

“I had no idea that I was even close to placing,” said Marvin. “It was really cool finding out that I placed first in my division. I was given the opportunity to meet and run with so many wonderful and talented people.”

Lopes’ Kaylee Padour placed second in her age group (female 19-24), while Jenna Miller finished fourth in her age group (female 19-24).

Phoenix 3TV 10K and Half-Marathon

Leading the way for the 5K race was Dafne Jimenez, who recorded an impressive time at 20:08, placing first in her age group (female 16-19), as well as taking 38th out of 526 runners overall. Lopes’ Jaimeson King followed closely behind with an 18:33 time, placing second in his age group (male 20-24).

All of the Lopes who participated in the 5K race placed fourth or higher.

Lopes’ returner Ryan McQuillan ran a 10K road race, placing fifth in his age group (male 37:56), and 30th out of all 953 runners with a time of 37:56. McQuillan, has trained under Sims for a few years and ran the Phoenix 5K last year, placed fourth in his age group.

“Being a part of Running Club has been fun and has taught me more about myself as an athlete,” said McQuillan. “Over these three years, I have grown significantly and want to continue to grow. I look forward to become a better leader on the team.”

Weeldreyer herself also participated in the race alongside her runners, placing fourth in the 10K in her age group (female 45-49).
