Very few coaches – on any level – show as much zeal about their sport than Weeldreyer. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the 2019-20 running season tested that enthusiasm at different times for the longtime GCU coach. Yet, while her Lopes were far from alone in losing part of their season to COVID-19, Weeldreyer still found the sunny side of that dilemma.
“What’s great about this team is that we live an active lifestyle,” said Weeldreyer. “Running, as we know it, has not been canceled. Besides, living an active lifestyle like running, hiking, walking or cross-training helps reduce stressors – especially during a time of social distancing.”
Lopes’ standout Ryan McQuillan was awarded GCU Club Sports Student Athlete of the Month for December. McQuillan has ran several races with the Lopes and often placed in the top three in his age group.
“As an athlete, running club has kept my training up and motivated me to work harder in every avenue of my life,” said McQuillan. “As a person, it has helped my communication skills.”
There isn’t a team in club sports that doesn’t try to set a positive culture to succeed, but GCU Running Club in particular made a positive team culture their primary goal.
And it’s working.
“I am so proud of each team member: for their commitment to training, reaching their goals whether in the classroom or on the road, and for being awesome student-athletes and teammates,” said Weeldreyer.
