Barring something unforeseen, there will be men’s rugby in 2021. And lots of it.
The Grand Canyon University Men’s Rugby team released its 2021 schedule, unveiling a nine-game slate featuring star-studded matchups with some of the top programs on the west coast.
The season will be a blur with all nine games taking place in just seven weeks.
Looking to build on a 4-2 season under now second-year head coach Sean O’Leary, the Lopes will open the campaign at home on February 6 with a non-conference showdown against the University of Colorado.
The schedule’s crown jewel, though, comes on February 27, when GCU hosts conference rival St. Mary’s College of Moraga.
Considered one of the heavyweight men’s rugby programs in the country, St. Mary’s beat GCU 69-7 last year in the Bay Area. The Gaels went 6-0 last season on their way to the California Conference title before COVID-19 prevented any playoff rugby from taking place.
The road side of the 2021 Lopes’ schedule features tough conference matchups against California Polytechnic University SLO (San Luis Obispo) and Santa Clara University on successive weekends, as well as trips to the University of Arizona, the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB).
The Lopes wrap up the regular season by hosting San Diego State University in late March.
