Got a taste of D1 play in 2019.

Now hungry for more.

In 2019, the Grand Canyon University Men’s Ice Hockey team played their first season as a Division 1 squad in the American Collegiate Hockey Association, but due to the uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic, they couldn’t finish it. With the new school year upon us, the Lopes are ready to get back on the ice as they released their full 2021-22 schedule. The Lopes’ D1 team will play a total of 29 games – 15 at home, 13 on the road and one at a neutral site. The schedule includes 20 conference matchups and nine non-conference games.

“The excitement to get back to a normal hockey season is evident amongst our team,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Danny Roy. “Our guys are ready to play outside opponents and compete for a purpose again.”

The Lopes’ D1 squad kick off their season with a two-game road series on October 1 and 2 in Flagstaff against the Northern Arizona University D2 team, then head east to play Maryville University and Missouri State University in the ‘Show Me State’ a week later.

The Lopes’ home opener will take place on October 16 against in-state rival University of Arizona at AZ Ice Arcadia, then wrap up their initial homestand the weekend after that against University of Colorado. Road matches against UofA and the first matchup of the season against Arizona State University ensue to establish bragging rights within the state.

“Our games against UofA and ASU are always marked on our calendar,” said Roy. “I always tell our players that no matter what happens throughout the season, we will play our best hockey against these teams.”

Another large focus on the Lopes’ schedule are the four University of Nevada, Las Vegas matchups. The Lopes have had historically competitive games against the Rebels, who were ranked No. 1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey League conference in the preseason coaches’ poll.

“We have a good enough team to compete with and beat UNLV this year,” said Roy. “Both our teams have potential to win the conference, so these matchups will be important this season.”

The Lopes will host the Rebels on December 3 and 4 before playing their final game of the fall semester against UofA in the Prescott Valley Arena up north on December 11.

The Lopes kick off 2022 with five straight home games throughout January. The Lopes will then have back-to-back road matchups against the University of Utah in the beginning of February before coming home for a pair of games against NAU. The Lopes will wrap up their regular season with two road games at UNLV.

“Our goal this year – like every year – is to make it to nationals and win a title,” Said Roy.

Should the Lopes make the ACHA D1 National Tournament, play begins March 10 with the championship round slated to take place March 15. All National Tournament games will be played in St. Louis, Missouri.
