The Grand Canyon University Men’s Club Basketball White team continued its recent struggles, going 0-3 in last week’s three-game series against Arizona State University in Tempe.
After a promising start to the season, the Lopes have now lost seven of their last eight contests. GCU (5-10) sits in third place in the National Club Basketball Association (NCBBA) Southern Pacific East Conference standings behind ASU Downtown (14-2) and ASU (7-6).
“It’s definitely frustrating,” said GCU White Head Coach Lamont Lane. “ASU added a few new guys to the team since the last time we played them. They played great and they played together. They didn’t get rattled when we made our runs. You have to tip your cap to them.”
After GCU gave away a second half lead to lose Thursday’s Game 1 by a score of 103-99, the Sun Devils controlled Games 2 and 3, taking both matchups by scores of 133-81 and 103-93, respectively.
GCU stayed close in Game 1 behind 75 combined points from Trever Ballard and Mason Peterson. Ballard poured in 44 points, while Peterson added 31 of his own to keep the Lopes within striking distance.
“Those two really played well,” Lane said. “They kept us in it and gave us a chance. We just couldn’t close out the first game, and that’s been a problem all year.”
GCU White will not play again until Friday’s National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Region VI Championship Series Tournament, which will be hosted by GCU in the Canyon Activity Center. Following the NIRSA Tournament, the Lopes will finish out their NCBBA schedule with a three-game series against GCU Purple.
“Our goal is to win it,” Lane said. “I think it’s going to come down to finding the right combination of guys to play together. Hopefully we can string together some wins at NIRSA and find something to build on.”
GCU Purple swept by ASU Downtown
GCU Purple suffered a similar fate, dropping all three games in last week’s series at ASU Downtown.
The Lopes fell by scores of 101-85, 90-68 and 100-67. GCU Purple sits in fourth place in the NCBBA Southern Pacific East standing with a 2-10 mark.
Tanner Doppler led all GCU scorers with 49 points in the series. Cameron Rawlings added 34, while Isaiah Saqui had 32.
GCU Purple begins a three-game series against ASU tonight (Tuesday) beginning at 6 pm. The series will finish up on Thursday night at 7 pm at the Lopes Performance Center.
GCU Purple is also entered in the NIRSA Regional Tournament, which begins Friday night and runs through Sunday afternoon.
