The Grand Canyon University Men’s Bowling team placed 10th and 16th, respectively, in last week’s Collegiate Shoot-Out and Las Vegas Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Lopes, coming off wins at the Oak Tree Open and Floria Financial Services Open in Southern California in November, were plagued by slow starts both days at the Las Vegas Invitational, which was held at the South Pointe Bowling Plaza and featured 42 teams from around the country.

The Lopes squeaked into the 16-team single-elimination bracket with solid qualifying round bowling on Day 1, but were handed the No. 16 seed and were eliminated by defending champion and top-seeded Webber International University of Florida.

Wichita State University of Kansas won the tournament, beating William Penn of Iowa in the championship round.

“We just didn’t get off to a great start either day,” GCU Head Coach Ben Canfield said. “We lost 3-1 in the best-of-five Baker games to Webber, but the match was close all the way. We gave them a good run.”

GCU rallied to take 10th at the Collegiate Shoot-Out, which featured six traditional games Friday and 16 Baker games Saturday to determine the eight teams in each division advancing to the following round.

Calumet College of St. Joseph in Indiana won the tournament, which was held at the Gold Coast Bowling Center.

“We started a lot faster in the second tournament,” Canfield said. “It was encouraging to see the improvement we made from one tournament to the next. The fact that we were up there with the top teams in a 42-team field is definitely a positive.”

GCU’s Mathew Adragna was one of seven players from the men’s field recognized as part of the all-tournament team. It was just another notch in a strong season for Adragna, who placed fourth in the Floria Financial Open and fifth in the Oak Tree Open last month to lead the Lopes.

“He’s bowled great this year,” Canfield said. “It was impressive to see him hold his own and do as well as he did in a field with so many talented bowlers.”

GCU returns to the lanes on Jan. 17 for the Collegiate Experience at Glenfair Lanes. Interested in joining GCU Club Bowling? Visit the team page to learn more!
