The Grand Canyon University Flag Football program is blossoming in the spring semester.
The school’s two flag football teams — GCU White and GCU Lopes – both won their City of Scottsdale 8 vs. 8 Division II matchups over the weekend at Chaparral Park to improve to a combined 3-1 through two weeks of action.
GCU White upped its record to a perfect 2-0 with a late 7-6 comeback victory over Megalodons, while the GCU Lopes dominated in a 26-0 win over Thursday Night Tomahawks to even its record at 1-1.
Winning cures all. Just ask Lopes’ Head Coach Justice Guerrero.
“You can just tell the guys are having fun out there,” Guerrero said. “There are a lot of guys from the fall team playing this semester, so it feels great to get a couple of wins right off the bat.”
A physical, back-and-forth defensive battle ended in a GCU White victory after quarterback Nathan Murrell hit Guerrero on a center wheel-route for a 40-yard touchdown pass with two minutes left in the game to even the score at 6-6. Murrell’s ensuing successful conversion run put GCU up 7-6, and the Lopes prevented any comeback with a late interception on the Megalodons’ final possession.
“It felt great to get the win, especially with our opponent coming in undefeated,” Guerrero said. “It’s definitely a confidence booster.”
No late game heroics were needed in GCU Lopes’ first win of the season. Lopes’ quarterback/defensive back Tyler Henry passed for three touchdowns and returned an interception for another as GCU ran away with a 26-0 win. Henry connected with receiver Michael Wilson for a 40-yard score for the final points of the game.
With multiple players unable to make the game for various reasons, GCU Lopes played short-handed on the offensive line.
“It was a ‘next man up’ mentality,” Guerrero said. “We didn’t have two of our normal offensive lineman, so we put a couple of our receivers on the line and they did a nice job.”
Both teams are back in action this weekend as GCU White plays The Tune Squad at 11 am and GCU Lopes squares off against Al’s Pals at 8 am. Both games are at Chaparral Park in Scottsdale.
