Let the games begin.
Playing in its first official competitive tournament of the 2019-20 season, the GCU Esports Overwatch team will compete in the Tespa Varsity Series Invitational Qualifier this weekend. The single-elimination tournament features a 128-team lineup with the top two universities in each bracket qualifying for the Varsity Invitational.
The Peacocks of Upper Iowa University in Fayette, IA are GCU’s first opponent. The match is set for Saturday at 10 am with the winner advancing to play Southern New Hampshire University at noon.
The Varsity Invitational consists of two regional round robin format tournaments. All qualifying teams will be placed into one of two regions of eight. At the end of the round robin, the top four teams from each group will advance to the Varsity Playoffs. The bottom four teams in each group will have the opportunity to qualify for the playoffs via the play-in stage.
Teams that survive to the Varsity Invitational will battle in a two-tower, five-floor single-elimination bracket. Each tower will be divided by Varsity Invitational region, with the two play-in teams placed randomly. The towers meet for the final match on Nov. 10 to determine the first-place winner.
GCU’s Varsity Overwatch roster is listed below, led by team coach Justen Johns.
