As the dawn of a new season quickly approaches, Grand Canyon University’s Esports Club continues to work towards finalizing the club’s competitive rosters in anticipation of another big year of gaming.
Rosters for Overwatch, Hearthstone, Counter-Strike and Rocket League have been finalized, while the battle for spots on the competitive Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Rainbow Six: Siege, League of Legends, Fortnite and Apex Legends teams are still being contested with the second week of tryouts wrapping up today.
The turnout for Esports tryouts has been impressive as droves of students have flocked to the newly renovated GCU Esports Arena to put their skills to the test. Finalized rosters for all competitive games are expected to be released on the GCU Club Sports website later this month.
“We’ve received over 400 new student registrations for the community since Welcome Week, and we have seen the room reach peaks between 70 to 100 students throughout the nights on weekdays and weekends,” said GCU Esports Coordinator Albert Lee.
The Lopes are looking to build on last year’s huge competitive success. GCU’s varsity Overwatch team enjoyed a stellar season that ended in the quarterfinals of the ESPN Collegiate Esports Championship in May. Included in the run was a 3-2 overtime victory over top-seeded University of California, Irvine.
DRL Super Smash Bros. Tournament a Hit
In collaboration with the Drone Racing League, the club hosted an open Super Smash Bros Ultimate and Fortnite Tournament last weekend designed for local high school students and GCU undergraduates. Over 120 students played in the tournament and had the opportunity to visit Chase Field in downtown Phoenix for the Drone Racing League Tournament and Exhibition in North America.
