The Grand Canyon University Club Softball team left it all on the field in a three-game series versus the University of California, Los Angeles April 6 at North Canyon High School. The Lopes swept the Bruins 6-5, 7-4 and 10-2 to extend their winning streak to five games.
“The girls usually put way too much pressure on themselves before the game starts,” said Lopes’ Head Coach Lindsey Collins. “This time, they were having fun from the start, and our bats came together right away as a team.”
The Lopes had important pitching performances by Alex Burcham, Ashley Fuller, Meg Sullivan, and Annamarie Cassidy to get the sweep of Saturday’s tripleheader. In the first game of the tripleheader series, Lopes’ Ashyln Dzialo went 3-for-4, and went 2-for-4 with two doubles in the second game.
GCU’s Kylee Cassidy went 2-for-4 the first game with two doubles, and 1-for-2 the second game with another double.
“I think it was one of our best series this season,” said Cassidy. “We played together as one team and it felt really good. When we play as one team, meaning everyone is involved whether that be on the field, batting or cheering on the bench, we play better.”
With grit and momentum, the Lopes pulled through with a second consecutive sweep.
“The three games against UCLA is how we should win every game,” said Annamarie Cassidy. “We played as a team. Every player on the team had a role during those games and I think they fulfilled those roles.”
Aside from the weekend victory, the Lopes honored seniors Alex Burcham, Launa Jones, and Annamarie Cassidy during pregame Senior Day festivities.
“My seniors are very strong females,” said Collins. “All three of them together have no problem pulling a team together and leading by example. They get the job done and these are going to be three tough ones that I am losing this year.”
The Lopes will finish out their regular season schedule this Saturday, April 20 with an important conference tripleheader in southern California against California State University, Fullerton beginning at 9 am.
