“There’s no trophy to show for it, but a flawless performance in my books.”

For the first time in club history, the GCU Club Acapella team competed in the International Collegiate Club Acapella Southwest Quarterfinals in Scottsdale. Amplified, the University of Arizona group, took home the big prize of the night with Law Capella (Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law) and Priority Male (Arizona State University) taking homesecond andthird place honors, respectively. Despite GCU’s Harmonic Thunder being left off the podium, GCU Club Acapella Director Philip Carr saw the event as a total success.

“Everyone on our team received acclaim and notoriety from the crowd and the other teams,” said Carr.  “Just because we didn’t finish at the top doesn’t mean we didn’t do an outstanding job.”

With a packed house to show for it, the Lopes performed in front of judges for the first time and seemed to be unphased.

“There was very little interaction with the judges,” said Carr. “That definitely calmed our nerves and allowed for the singers to do their thing.”

Each group was given 12-15 minutes to perform a montage of songs with choreographed dancing and absolutely no instruments accompanying. The performance is graded based on two main categories – vocal performance and visual performance – with each criterion having subcategories that the groups are judged on.

“Obviously, there was a little bit of performance anxiety, and the choreography was brand-new,” said Carr. “However, it did not affect our vocal performance at all. We sounded great.”

This event was the accumulation of years of hard work for a lot of the Lopes’ club members, and as Carr put it, “This event is the biggie.”

It was also a good test to see where the club stacks up as they head into their second on-campus showcase of the year on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 6 pm at Thunder Alley. Admission is free.

“We still have 10 weeks remaining together,” said Carr. “We still have some work to do, and we can always get better.  I am looking forward to hearing ‘Harmonic Thunder’ perform this same set during our showcase.” Interested in learning more or joining a Club Sport/GCU Acapella?
