Grand Canyon University Club Sports

Welcome to GCU Club Spikeball

GCU Club Spikeball provides students to compete against skilled athletes from other colleges and universities . Alongside competition and performance, club sports places an emphasis on student initiative and team management, allowing participants to shape their own experience. GCU participates in the Southwest Region which competes against schools such as Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, UCLA, San Diego State, California Baptist University, University of California-Santa Barbara, University of California-Irvine, Arizona State University, Azusa Pacific and many more.

Our team will practice multiple times per week which involves competing, lifting in the weight room and watching film from other athletes. This will allow players to obtain new skills and improve upon old ones while helping teammates achieve success to become a better unit. GCU competes in three big tournaments throughout the season, fall regionals, spring regionals and nationals.

Our mission here at Grand Canyon University is to build community by bringing people together through competition and fun. This is our first year as an official club, so we are constantly looking to expand our team and create more opportunities for student involvement. These are exciting times and we look forward to the development of the program!

Devon Mitchell begins his second season as the head coach of the new Grand Canyon University Club Spikeball program.

Mitchell is a newly minted GCU graduate, having earned his bachelor’s degree in Sports Management with an Emphasis in Business Analytics in December. Mitchell is from Vista, California and has always actively been involved in the community as he attended North Coast Church and was an active servant in his community. He worked for the City of Vista in the Parks and Recreation Department, and was also a District 70 umpire for Little League Baseball. He started high school as a small forward in basketball, then an injury before playoffs resulted in him switching to cross-country and track and field for the remainder of his high school career.

Mitchell was first introduced to Spikeball on a Fellowship of Christian Athletes leadership retreat in Mammoth, California, where all of the presidents in the nearby local school districts came together in the summer of 2016 to pray over their schools. It wasn’t until Mitchell’s freshman year of college where he decided to take his game to the next level and traveled on his own with a group from campus. They did this for two years, which resulted in winning local tournaments – including the 2017 Fall Southwest Regional Championship.

Mitchell will continue to help the Lopes on the court as an athlete, as well as coach the team to return to championship contenders as they compete in fall regionals, spring regionals and nationals.
