Welcome to GCU Club Beach Volleyball

GCU Club Beach Volleyball is ready for its fifth year of competition at Grand Canyon University in 2021-22.  GCU Club Beach Volleyball provides an opportunity for students to meet new friends, compete in meets across Arizona, and take pride in representing their university while focusing on earning a degree.  Club Beach strives to provide a positive and energetic student experience, and help create memories that will last a lifetime.

GCU Club Beach Volleyball played its first match in February 2018 and looks to continue its growth to allow more opportunities for student involvement.  Club Beach’s season usually consists of fall practices and scrimmages, and a competitive tournament schedule in the spring. The team competes locally against community colleges and four-year university club programs. The team also competes in tournaments and in-house competitions to provide unique and positive team experiences as well as an opportunity to promote Grand Canyon University to a more diverse audience.

We are looking forward to future GCU students joining Club Beach Volleyball as we work toward developing our level of competition.

Mia Martinez is entering her second season as head coach of Grand Canyon University’s Club Beach Volleyball.

Martinez has built quite the resumé in the volleyball world as both a player and coach. Raised in Gilbert, Martinez grew up participating in local sand tournaments. Martinez continued to develop her volleyball skills on an indoor court competing for Club One AZ, then went on to play varsity volleyball at Gilbert High School, leading the team to the Arizona 5A-1 State Championship title her junior year.

Martinez eventually took her talents to Arizona State University where she played all four years on the NCAA Beach Volleyball team. In her senior season for the Sun Devils, Martinez competed as the 1’s pair, facing the toughest opponents in the nation. During her time at ASU, Martinez helped pave the way for youth beach volleyball in the Phoenix area coaching for One Beach, working with ages ranging from 10 to 18 years old from 2013-2019. She also spent a year as head coach of the Veritas Prep beach volleyball team in 2018, followed by a stint as an assistant coach for the beach volleyball program at Gilbert High School in 2019. Additionally, Martinez coached indoor volleyball for Club One AZ from 2012-2016 in ages U-13 to U-18, and 5th grade through 8th grade at Phoenix Country Day School.

Martinez graduated from ASU with a bachelor’s degree in both Criminology and Criminal Justice as well as Communications. While at ASU, she also earned a master’s degree in Criminal Justice. Martinez currently works as a juvenile probation officer for Maricopa County, and lives in Chandler with her husband, Alex Martinez.
